It's just so stupid to default on student loans, because they will work with you if you just call them up. And the classes that are required for students to go to before they can get a loan - every single quarter or semester - drill it over and over, that if you get into trouble just call them!

I went back to school early 2000's in my 40's, and so I know there is no excuse for a student loan to go to default.

That said, if they're really young and everything else looks good, I might consider them. But, if they also didn't pay their cell phone bill and it also went to collection after receiving notice after notice....

run the other way. This is someone who can afford to make their payments, but decide they just have to have that new pair of shoes instead. Which will be what you hear every month, too.
