How do you if your getting false references? - Landlord Forum thread 335380

How do you if your getting false references? by babbles (Texas) on May 23, 2015 @23:02

I have a reputable company checking references for me on a potential tenant. I've heard you can do reverse lookup to find if their references are legitimate but what if the person is renting from a homeowner and that is the reference. Couldn't he or she be somebody just covering for the person? Will reverse lookup indicate anything fishy?

I am doing as much internet homework and research as I can on a potential applicant that has been referred to me.

You take it with a grain of salt. Look into the landlord before the family member.

I think you are letting your imagination run away with you. If you dig deep enough, you can always find something "fishy", or some "dirt" on someone-----even your closest friends or relatives. Let the company run the app, and if they find something that you don't like, don't rent to that person. But don't spend hours on end researching all kinds of things, just to try to find that 1 little item that will allow you to not rent to them. By the way, if you are doing all this research on your own, why do you need another company to do it to?
