Please explain how the landlord is the possibly uninformed when the tenant is breaking a term of the lease. It seems an possibly uninformed would be a landlord who does not enforce the lease.

You have to choose your battles in business. Yes you are right. The Landlord is right. The lease should be enforced, but is this the issue to ruin a good tenancy over? This is not one with a harmonious outcome for either. Maybe this was the last straw, but good luck evicting over a flag.
