The best place to find out is your city's fire department website. Each city complies with state requirements but some had added requirements of which you need to be aware.
For example, when I had my SoCal rental, smoke detectors were to be mounted in each bedroom, one in the hall outside the bedrooms, and a CO alarm outside bedrooms. Because it was a two-story house, I had to have the hall smoke alarm and another CO alarm upstairs also.
In my NorCal rentals, I have to now install 10-year smoke alarms in each bedroom, one in the hall outside the bedrooms and a CO alarm outside the bedrooms.
So, requirements can vary. Your local fire department will help you out.
