I think its okay if you give notice of entering OR its obvious they moved out.
obvious signs of being gone:
High grass no lights
driving by
mailbox over flowing

I downloaded the police handbook for conneticut, but im trying to find one for north carolina because thats where im doing business.

in that online manual it discussed at length of how to determine if a landlord was with in his rights to enter the property.

worthless if the laws are different though so find your states.
