property abandonment VA by lblester69 on August 10, 2017 @17:34

my main question is what is considered property abandonment? my landlord is giving me trouble right now saying that i abandoned the property (been staying with my disabled mother for a couple months helping take care of her) but rent has been paid on time, all my stuff is still in the apartment and i haven't even changed my address... i'm trying to move out now and he changed the locks on me two days before this months rent was due and refuses to give me a key even though my name is still on the lease and claims i have to have my roommates consent to be there without her. keep in mind i've had no written notices of anything whatsoever

don't know VA law but I would guess that if rent has been paid and you're current,....it's not abandonment. check your lease regarding ''guests'' ''roommates'' and ''sub leasing / sub letting''. NO OTHER PROBLEMS OR ISSUES YOU'RE NOT MENTIONING HERE ?? if your ''roommate / girlfriend'' is not a signatory on the lease, at best she is your guest or an illegal occupant.

Perhaps she got a restraining order against you and your LL wants you out anyway ??

Perhaps she was the one who changed the locks ??

Sounds like this could be a good pilot for a cable tv show.
