There could be a little fraud going on by either the applicants or the real estate agent who wanted to make the deal.

I would confront the tenants with wanting "clear up a mistake my management company asked me about".

If they are on the level, they'll supply the correct info.
If not, well, you'll really have to be on your toes ready to enforce your lease and evict if they mess up.
But right now, if they are in there already, try not to rock the boat more than necessary.
