Wrong wrong wrong. This is bad advice. This is not a do it yourself handy Andy job. You need a licensed Plumber or Gas specialist to check for a gas leak.
I can see you in front of a judge trying to explain how you sprayed soapy water on the gas pipe and did not see any bubbles. Two hours latter BOOM. You would loose in court big time.
If you smell gas, then get off the computer and call the gas company or Plumber, to shut it off.
