It looks to me like the "smart key" mechanically resets the pins within the lock to allow you to use a key that has a different pin set, thus you can re-key the lock.

I'm not sure about the new Kwikset smart key but when decided on locks and knobs I read a lot of reviews. Kwikset uses a lot of plastic for the guts of their locks and knobs. Plastic breaks and can be broken.

I use Schlage locks, all metal guts, with a "C" keyway and just re-pin them to a new key. You can get a pin kit and a bag of keys on Amazon for about $100.00. It takes me about 5 minutes to re-key a lock.

I have never had a problem with kwikset locks. Any door or house can be broken into. Kwickset locks are more affordable to allow you to change out after 5 or 6 years of service if you want, if your concerned about plastic parts wear.

Thanks. I have been watching many YouTubes on this Smartkey and re-pinning. With your advice I'll forget Smartkeys-especially if tenants can re-key themselves.
I'll work on the changing pins, I think.

Extra question about buying pins & bag of keys. Are the keys Schlage blanks? Are you filing your own new keys? Or are the keys a mixture of mfgrs and bittings to which you use and drop your own pins in to match the new key?
In my next life I may choose to get training as a locksmith.

The bag of keys are Schlage keys and are all cut to different pin sets, it was 20 pairs of keys. Schlage has a kit with all of the numbered pins, extra springs and a couple of little tools.

You'll have to copy/paste the links.

While that Kwikset smart key looks like a great solution to speedy lock changing I much prefer to change the pins. This allows me to lubricate the guts while I have the lock taken apart.
