If it was not mentioned in your original lease, then you should send them a separate letter now about it. Tell them you will be accessing the garage "from time to time", and not accessing their home. If you can see inside the yard just by walking up to the front of the garage, then tell them to please keep their yard looking presentable, so you won't have to comment about it to them.
