Also place it in each bedrooms and at the top of the stairs. Smoke detectors are very cheap and better safe than sorry. We own a second rental home and that is how was given to the renters. After that is the responsibility of my tenants to make sure they replace it when is needed.
I also tell them to buy a good CO detector.
