He already made several missteps: notification must be in writing and he must show proof of the order to deploy or a letter from his CO. If it is in order, the lease terminates 30 days later. I suggest you respond that he needs to follow the SCRA guidelines by providing those things or he may be responsible for the remainder of the lease.

There may be other considerations for New Jersey, but I did not come across any.

If he is trying to use the SCRA to scam his way out of a lease, I wouldn't let him. However, if he really is being redeployed, be cordial and professional about it.
