In my state I have up to 5 years to sue a Tenant for damages.

Facebook is not "legal notification" of your new address.
You should have either handed the notice along with your keys or sent notice via US mail to your former Landlord.

Agreed. I'm sick of people thinking Facebook is appropriate for any kind of official or legal communication.

I'm 32; I work in technology. I had Facebook for a while, but deleted it 2 years ago due to its stupidity.

I would NEVER friend a landlord on Facebook to begin with, and certainly would never use ANY kind of electronic communication as anything 'official'.

Facebook is legal notification. Written notice is written notice no matter if it is text,facebook, email or sent certified mail. Try using that against one of my clients and I will laugh you out of court!
