most jurisdictions now REQUIRE co detectors as well as smoke. the new ones have 10 yr rated batteries,....so we'll all see. most jursidictions require the LL to furnish and install. maintain varies.
I agree smoke detectors are cheap and one in each sleepeing area plus kitchen, fireplace, mechanical room are good ideas

It's not good to put smoke detectors in kitchens, just outside bathrooms with showers, or within 15 ft of a fireplace. The new ones nowadays are very sensitive, and will set off with hardly any smoke or heat present. Steam from a bathroom also sets them off. After 1 or 2 keep going off several times while people are just doing their daily activities, pretty soon the tenants take out the batteries, and then they are worthless.
