Aggressive Breeds?

We know that Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers are considered aggressive dog breeds by their appearance and nature. Do you think that Boxers, Chows, and Bulldogs are universally considered aggressive breeds? I am having trouble reconciling what dogs are commonly considered aggressive versus any breed of dog trained for attack purposes. How do you determine what constitutes a breed you will absolutely not accept? What types of dogs do you allow? The Humane Society has guidelines that downplay the pets breed in tenent decisions for other criteria such as a veternarian reference, a landlord reference, evidence of shots, license, and spaying. How do you determine what types of dogs you accept? Texas.

I put a breed restriction on prospective tenants. I say anything over 50lbs. is too large. I do however have a townhouse. You may want to meet the dog and can get a better idea of its attitude/disposistion. I think that tenants are responsible for their pets but I, if I were you, wouldn't take a chance on dogs that are prown to have an aggressive nature.

Your insurance company has their own list of aggressive breeds. At a minimum, follow that list.

I will admit that I do allow pet (specific non-aggressive breeds). I will say this: I've always owned Golden Retrievers. Yet, insurance company "ban" Golden Retrievers? HA! Good thing my insurance company does not have Golden Retriever as part of the restricted breeds.

In my opinion, it's not the dogs that are the problem, it's the people who own them.

More and more of the best apartments in Dallas, as well as properties located all across Texas, are requiring "pet interviews" rather than blacklisting entire breeds of dogs. This is a much more reliable way to screen out aggressive animals. After all, a chihuahua can be a biter and be aggressive, whereas Great Danes don't have the nickname "Gentle Giant" for nothing. They are an extremely calm and gentle dog. By interviewing the dog the leasing staff can get a better sense of his/her friendliness towards strangers.
This, combined with a recommendation from a Vet, will help screen out most problem pets. If an animal is aggressive, the Vet would know it. Have you ever tried to give a shot or look inside the ear of an aggressive animal? Lol. That Vet will not give a letter of recommendation for an animal he knows is aggressive.
This website has an interesting article talking about renters who are looking for apartments, and the challenges they face when they have a unique pet situation (such as owning a restricted dog breed, or owning more than 2 pets), and the best way to address these problems: http://www.bestapartmentsdfw.com/articles-of-interest/how-can-i-find-an-apartment-that-will-take-my-pet-s

I would recommend restricting pit bulls, staffordshire terriers and American bulldogs. I'm not personally a breed hater but I am realistic and when it comes to renters many do not like to visit a property and see a ton of people with large dogs that look like pit bulls. The bottom line is that as land lord you can restrict by breed or weight as long as you follow the fair housing guidelines of your state and county.

Hello on exactly what list did you see that rottweilers are considered an aggressive dog breed? I ask because even according to the ASPCA/humane society and other agencies a Rott is considered a work dog and semi territorial and not considered to be an aggressive dog at all. hell they even adopt 5 year old males out..
and according to the government and universitys the most aggressive dog breed are..
1.weenie dogs Dachshund
2.chihuahuas
3.jack russells
so please stop fear mongering amongst yourselves and get your facts right.. it make us tenants lifes hard who happen to own a dog that you consider aggressive with out the proper facts.
With Breed Specific Legislation acts being brought forward in more and more areas across the country, dogs like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers and other “scary” looking breeds are in danger of losing their homes and even their lives. These breeds are often touted as being extremely aggressive – however a new study released this week in the journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science provides some statistical facts on what breeds actually ARE the most aggressive – and the answers may surprise you!

All state doesn't discrimate against pittbulls. They cover me and my dog (who is a pit and is the biggest baby ever) So not every insurance company is biased and goes out of their way to ban a breed most people know nothing about. "Aggressive breeds" is a lame excuse to blame animals when it's the owners fault. My pit has been attacked my a chihuahua and didn't even fight back and had to get stitches. Don't say my breed is dangerous when they are the first decorated war vets, nanny dogs, and some of the best service animals. Get your facts not what you hear in the news. You are more likely to be killed by a coconut falling from a tree than a pitbull.

Well said about the small dogs. I personally have been bitten by both weenie dogs, which are the worste, AND chihuahuas - several times. I have NEVER been bitten by a dog on the so called banned breed list. Lets ban cars next since they kill more people in ONE year than all the dogs in the world have in 10,000 years!

A Pug is on the aggressive breed list???? Are you kidding me?! I find that laughable, as my family raised them and not one puppy or grown dog had an aggressive bone in their little bodies. They are jealous.. Of each other. Best part of my child hood. My 9 yr old has a 35lb 3mth old pit bull terrier. He is big. When I say big, I mean he is a TANK!! That dog follows her like bad habit and he sleeps with her every night. He is also a big pudding. Never met a bad pit and we have had a lot in the extended family too. They are the best family pets you could dream of having. Me and my husband plan on adding two monster Cane Corso's to our little family soon :) There are no bad dogs, just bad, inattentive or negligent owners.

Golden Retriever is an aggressive breed?!?! I raise Goldens and the only thing they are known to be aggressive about it the amount of hair they shed!! Lol! Where the hell is the poodle or chihuahua?? I'd never own one or rent to anyone with either because they are very aggressive and biters! Someone needs to do their research better on these breeds.
